Human chain against militancy
A human chain was formed against militancy and terrorism in front of Gazipur Press Club organized by Engineers Institutions Bangladesh, Gazipur district unit yesterday.
President of the organisation and also vice-chancellor of Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) professor Dr Mohammed Alauddin, secretary professor Dr Mohammed Kamruzzaman, departmental head of civil engineering department of DUET professor Dr Mohammed Mukhlesur Rahman, head of Architecture department Dr Gonesh Chandra Saha and head of Textile department Dr Abdus Shahid spoke in the human chain. On the other hand, BCS Sadharon Shikkha Samity, Bhawal Badre Alam Government University College unit in Gazipur also formed another human chain in front of the college on Dhaka – Mymensing highway at Bhogra area of Gazipur city yesterday.

One killed in road crash
A helper of a pick up van was killed in a road accident at Kharajura area of Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, 35, son of Abed Ali of Sontushpur area of Fulpur upazila in Mymensing district.
Officer in charge of Konabari Highway police station Abu Dawood said, a Kaliakoir bound pick up van was hit by a truck from behind at the area, leaving helper of the pick up van Saiful  dead on the spot. On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body and sent it to Gazipur sader hospital morgue for autopsy.

Seven food shops fined
Members of Department of National Consumer Right Protection (DNCRP) yesterday fined seven food shops of Tk 27,000 in Rajshahi on charges of selling date-expired and sub-standard food.
A DNCRP team conducted raids at Mohishalbari, Daingpara and Gopalpur areas and found Bhai Bhai Hotel and Restaurant, Hamid Hotel, Sadeque Hotel, Abdullah Stores, Bishmillah Hotel and Restaurants and Nishan Hotel guilty of preparing, possessing and selling food and other consumer items in unhygienic condition.
The team fined the shops Taka 27,000 and realized the fined money from the shop owners on the spot.
Deputy Director of DNCRP, Mahabubur Rahman said the drive against the violations of consumers' rights will continue.

3 Jamaat men among 50 held
Police arrested 50 people, including three chargesheeted accused and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, from different places in the district Tuesday night.
The arrested Jamaat activists are Saheb Ali, 46, of Mithapukur upazila, Shahidul Islam, 25, of Kotwali Thana and Mohammad Ali, 52, of Pirgachha upazila in the district.
Police said the Jamaat men were nabbed from different areas in their respective upazila and they are chargesheeted in different cases on charges of attacking policemen, subversive and terrorist acts.
Besides, police arrested more 47 people, including absconding chargesheeted accused persons of different cases, warrantees, drug traders, anti-social elements and other suspicious people from all over the district.

96 held with arms, yaba in Ctg
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) arrested at least 96 people with firearms, yaba, liquor and hemp, in a series of overnight drives conducted in different areas in the city during the last 24 hours on Tuesday.
A total of 4,245 pieces of contraband yaba tablets, 80 kilograms of liquor, 500 grams hemp, one single barrel gun, two cartridges and 4,321 pieces biometric SIM were seized during the drive.
A press release of CMP press wing said the 96 people were held during overnight raid from 16 Thanas of the port city.
