Five factories fined for polluting environment

Department of Environment (DOE) yesterday fined five factories Tk 35.22 lakh in Gazipur for running the factories without effluent treatment plant (ETP) and polluting the environment by discharging untreated liquid from the factories.
Director (Monitoring and enforcement) of DOE Dr Mohammed Anwar Hossain Hawlader fined the owners of the factories after a hearing held at the head office of DOE in the capital.
Assistant director of DOE (Monitoring and enforcement) Mohammed Mozahidur Rahman said, a team of DOE recently visited different factories in Gazipur and found that the authorities of the factories have been operating their factories without ETP and discharging liquid waste to the environment directly without any treatment. Later, the DOE authority called the owners of the factories to its head office in Dhaka and held a hearing.  The DOE fined Tk 15.20 lakh at Dalas Fashion Limited, Tk 12.28 lakh at Masco Industries Limited, Tk 6.96 lakh at Crossline Knit Fabrics, Tk 78,000 at Indigo Washing Limited and Tk 534 at Gentry Pharmaceuticals Limited.
The DOE also directed the factory authorities to set up ETP immediately and operate the plants keeping the highest limit of the standard of liquid according to the Bangladesh Environment Conservation Rules, 1997.
On the other hand, two feed factories in Gazipur yesterday were also fined Tk 1.75 lakh for producing contaminated food for cattle farm and operating the factories without necessary documents from the concerned department.
A mobile court formed by Gazipur sader upazila livestock office fined the owners of the factories after conducted a drive in  the Asha Agro Industries Limited  at Membar Bari area and Bangladesh Krishi Feed Limited at Noljani area of Gazipur. The mobile court also closed the factories at the same time and destroyed about 33 tons of contaminated food that were stored in the factories.
