Bus strike in Rajshahi Division withdrawn

The indefinite bus strike in seven districts of Rajshahi division has been called off yesterday by the leaders of Rajshahi district Transport Workers Union after 35 hours.
The indefinite bus strike started from Tuesday 6am, as a part of a sequel to the conflict between the transport workers and owners of Rajshahi and Natore.
It is learnt, the feud began earlier this month when Natore transport owners shut down two counters of Dhaka coaches of National Travels and Desh Travels, and asked Rajshahi bus owners not to let their buses enter Natore before noon.
Mahatan Hossain Chowdhury, Secretary of Rajshahi district Transport Workers Union, said there was a fruitful tripartite discussion with the district administration, local administration and transport leaders at Natore Deputy Commissioner’s office.
The meeting was attended, among others, by Shamol Kumar Mukherjee, Police Super of Natore, Anwar Hossain Khan, Additional Police Super of Natore, Abdullah al Maruf, Deputy Director of NSI, Natore, Proshanto Kumar Poddar, Sajedul Islam Sagar, President and Secretary of Bus & Minibus owner’s Association in Natore.  
“Based on this meeting, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Fazle Rabbi called me and informed about this fruitful meeting and said they accepted our demands. However; after hearing this news we declared to run our transports”, Chowdhury said.     
He further said, workers of Rajshahi district transport workers association were being harassed at Natore Harashpur bypass area every day. However; a gang of extortionist, known as “MP Shimul’s cadre’ collect extortion by force from every buses and trucks of Rajshahi.
On the other hand, they do not run of any transports of Rajshahi before 12pm from Natore, Chawdhury added. That is why; along with workers leaders of Rajshahi district transport workers association was decided to stop all transport in Rajshahi division without Natore. And they demanded unrestricted access to Natore bypass road without any extortion.
