Water experts and activists called for mobilising public opinion in favour of the protecting rivers which are basic to life and livelihood to 160 million people of Bangladesh.
They made the call at an opinion exchange meeting at the National Press Club in the capital yesterday organised by the International Farakka Committee (IFC), a water rights watch group. The speakers said although there are differences of opinion among political parties and organisations, there exists a consensus in Bangladesh on the issue of rivers and their water. They welcomed the IFC for its success to bring all parties to a common platform on the issue of water.
Presided over by Atiqur Rahman Salu, chairman, IFC New York, the meeting was addressed by water experts Engr Inamul Huq, Dr. SI Khan, IFC Bangladesh president Prof. Jashim Uddin Ahmad, secretary Jatiya Press Club, Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, general secretary Revolutionary Workers Party, Saiful Haque, Mahmudul Hasan Manik, member politbureau of Workers Party, water expert Dr. Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, Bazlur Rashid Firoze of Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD), Khalekuzzaman
Chowdhury of Jatiya Party, Shahidullah Kaider of Nagorik Oikya, Mahmuda Arfan Choity of Bhashani Adarsa Anushilon Parishad, journalist Rafiqul Islam Azad and IFC coordinator Mostafa Kamal Majumder.
The speakers called for involving youths with the movement for protecting rivers and their water to strengthen the public opinion on the issue and accelerate the process of keeping nature’s bounty – the rivers - alive through people-to-people exchanges of opinion across river basins.
