The Kalyanpur operation

The Kalyanpur operation

In what was a successful operation against alleged militants at Kalyanpur in the capital the day before yesterday, the law enforcing agencies busted a den of militant suspects, killing nine of them. The promptness and skill of the law enforcers with which they conducted the whole operation dubbed as “Operation Storm-26” after receiving intelligence that the militant suspects were planning to launch an attack, indeed deserves praise. The police showed exemplary and mature handling of a critical situation in which innocent people could have become casualties.
Thankfully the operation began at July 26 night when people in the locality were already indoors and this made the conduction of the whole operation much easier in that regard. The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was right when she said that if their den at Kalyanpur could not be smashed, the city dwellers might have witnessed another gruesome terrorist attack. And this time the attack could have been much greater in magnitude than the Gulshan attack of July 1.
But with the successful operation at Kalyanpur, it cannot just be said that threat from the militants has diminished. Far from it, the militants could even be more ferocious now and want to take revenge of the loss of their fellow militants. That is why the law enforcers must not take any respite in their vigilance against the terrorists from whom no one seems to be safe now. Their malicious intent in creating panic in society and convincing people that the state cannot protect the life of the innocents must not allowed to become successful. The civilized society must prevail over them.
Terrorism in the recent days has become a global phenomenon and Bangladesh, that was hitherto peaceful, is not alone victim to it. And dealing with better it is necessary to have cooperation between countries to countries.
However, after the July 1 Gulshan attack, the government in Bangladesh seems to have been showing the right kind of seriousness in dealing with the menace. Besides intensifying the efforts of the law enforcers, the relevant entities of the government are also trying to raise awareness of the people in general. And this indeed is commendable.
But a note of caution must be made here. Dealing with militancy must be careful enough so that militants must not win the sympathy of people in any way.
