A woman, who reportedly ate chemically treated mango, died from suspected poisoning at the Mirzapur Kumuddini Medical College Hospital on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Jamela Khatun, 85, of village Golli in Mirzapur Upazila. Three others also fell sick after taking the mango from same source. Selim Mia, UP member of Louhati Union in Delduwar upazila, said that the woman went to her daughter’s house at Louhati in the upazila on Tuesday. The next day, she along with others at the house took milk and mango, which were bought from the local bazaar, at Sehiri, a late-night meal before fasting, on Wednesday. Jamela Khatun, her daughter Anowara Begum 50, her granddaughters Rakha Akhter 26 and Tania Akhter 22 fell sick. They were admitted to Mirzapur Kumuddini Hospital where Jamela Khatun died on Thursday. Medical officer of the hospital Dr Pobitra Sharmin said that the four were admitted to the hospital with poisoning. One died and three survived, she added. Meanwhile, as the news spread the people of the area have stopped taking mango since the death of Jamela Khatun.
