Tin Bigha Corridor free day observed

Our correspondent, Lalmonirhat

Several thousand enclave dwellers of both Bangladesh and India observed the ‘Tin Bigha corridor free day’ on Tin Bigha in Patgram upazila yesterday noon.   The Tin Bigha Corridor is a strip of land belonging to India on the West Bengal–Bangladesh border which, in September 2011, was leased to Bangladesh so that it can access its Dahagram–Angarpota enclaves.
They came from the enclaves in Panchagarh, Kurigram, Thakurgaon and Lalmonirhat districts to Tin Bigha corridor. And the people living in Bangladeshi enclaves inside India also gathered there to join the programme. This has
been an annual event for a long time.
But this year, it has turned into a euphoria of the enclave people because of the LBA (land boundary agreement) signed by the two neighbouring countries.
Yakub Ali, 55, a resident of Nalgram enclave in Shitolkuchi of Cooch Behar district in India, told The Independent standing the barbed wire fence that their painful wait and agony have come to an end after
68 years. “Now, we have our identity,” he said.
Shahana Begum, 22, a resident of Nalgram Bangladeshi enclave in India came to meet with her uncle. When asked about their livelihood in the enclave Shahana said that their life was full of sorrow and miseries, but now they are free.
The people, who gathered behind the barbed wire fence, hailed Narendro Modi, Sheikh Hasina and Indira-Mujib treaty in slogans.
They thanked the both premiers of the two countries for ratifying the LBA.
Diptiman Sengupta, secretary of Bharat-Bangla enclave exchange coordination committee (BBEECC) Indian part spoke on the occasion beside the barbed wire in Indian side.
Moinul Haque and Golam Mostofa of BBEECC, Bangladesh chapter, also spoke from Bangladesh side.
