Renowned cardiologist and former director of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) Professor Dr M Akhteruzzaman passed away at Metropolitan Medical
Center (MMC) in the capital yesterday. He was 74.
He had been suffering from various old age complications, and kept on life support at the MMC for the last several days. Dr Zaman left behind his wife, three daughters, grandchildren and a host of relatives to mourn his death.
He was buried at Rayerbazar graveyard in the afternoon after four namaj-e-janaza held at MMC, Elephant Road Baitul Ma’mur Mosque, NICVD and Bangladesh Medical College.
Dr Zaman was born in an aristocratic Muslim family in Manikganj on February 21 in 1942. He stood first in final MBBS examination in 1964, and obtained his MRCP degree in first attempt from Royal College of Physicians of UK.
Dr Zaman served as an assistant surgeon in Dhaka Medical College Hospital from 1965 to 1970. He was also a director and professor of cardiology in the NICVD, principal of Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College and principal and professor of cardiology in Bangladesh Medical College.
Dr Zaman was also a life member of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), National Heart Foundation and Bangladesh Cardiac Society. He was honoured with Atish Dipankar Award in 2003 and Deshbandhu CR Das Gold Medal in 2004 for his outstanding contribution to medical science. Dr Zaman has about 35 publications in different journals home and abroad to his credit.
