Artists Razib Datta and Rafiqul Islam Shuvo have been awarded with ‘Aminul Islam Young Artist Award 2015’. The names of this year’s winners were announced at the inauguration ceremony of the Open Studio at the Gyantapash Abdur Razzaq Bidyapeeth, Dhanmondi on Saturday. Razib Datta’s award came for the medium of painting and digital collage, while Rafiqul Islam Shuvo received the award for the medium of Photography, Painting, Drawing and Video Art.
Organised by Bengal Foundation, eminent artist Mustafa Monwar, artist Dhali Al Mamoon, Ruby Islam and chairman of Bengal Foundation Abul Khair were present at the studio’s opening ceremony and handed over the awards to the winners. The award is valued at Tk 1,00,000.
The winners of the award were short listed and selected by an independent jury, and the organisation process for the award ceremony was managed by Bengal Foundation. For the 2015 award, the application deadline was 31 March 2016, and after the preliminary selection, ten short listed candidates have been selected from the applicants. The names of the artists are-- Ali Asgar, Palash Baran Biswas, Palash Bhattacharjee, Muhammad Rafiqul Islam Shuvo, Razib Datta, Reetu Sattar, Rupam Roy, Salma Abedin Prithi, Samsul Alam Helal and Zihan Karim. An open studio has been arranged to display and showcase selected works of these artists.
In recent years, Rafiqul Islam Shuvo has worked on several new avenues of expression, including sculptural installations, painting, video and photography. Shuvo earned his BFA and MFA, in sculpture, from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University. He is the founder of 'OGCJMart' Art Collective, and also curated a group show entitled 'Only God Can Judge Me' in 2012.
Razib Datta works with drawing, text and digital art. He deconstructs the traditional language of art and cinema in his works. Razib studied at the University of Chittagong, Faculty of Fine Arts. His works were exhibited in shows organised by Kalakendra, Bengal Foundation and others.
To note, artist Aminul Islam (1931-2011) is amongst the first generation artists in Bangladesh. One of the pioneering members of the modern art movement in the country, his dedication, contemporary take and ceaseless practice has made vital contributions in broadening the horizons of the practice of modern art today.
