MOULVIBAZAR: Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon yesterday said Sylhet can be a gateway to the northeastern part of India and regional communication including Nepal and Bhutan, reports BSS. “A new door will be opened for country’s economic development, expansion of trade and commerce, and tourism through this doorway in Sylhet,” he said at a discussion on ‘Tourism in Sylhet’ at Tea-Heaven Resort of Sreemangal here.

Referring to various development projects taken recently, Menon said the government has taken pragmatic steps considering the geographical aspects in this region to materialize the combined planning in the tourism sector. The minister said the innovation works of runway in the Osmani International Airport is on progress so that citizens of Nepal, Bhutan and Northeast India would use this airport comfortably. “Besides, initiative has also been taken to build a modern tourist complex on 30-acre land at Malinichhara. The present government is working to build a communication bridge in airways through operating direct flight to and from Sylhet and Cox’s Bazar,” he added. Among others, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Moulvibazar Maksudur Rahman Sikder, Sreemangal Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Biswajit Pal, Sreemangal Press Club General Secretary Isdris Ali, head of news of banglanews24.com Mahbub Menon also took part in the discussion.
