An Indian wild elephant that entered Bangladesh floating with the currents of the Brahmaputra River a month ago could not be rescued until yesterday.
After a long journey, the female elephant took shelter to a remote char in Sirajganj district.  It is learnt that an Indian team will reach the spot soon to rescue the elephant.
According to sources, the wild elephant got separated from her herd in Assam and floated into Bangladesh with floodwaters through Roumari border in Kurigram on June 27.
In search of her herd, the elephant had already roamed scores of miles from Kurigram to Sirajganj via Sariakandi and Dhunat upazilas of Bogra and Madarganj of Jamalpur, creating panic among locals. The elephant left Sinnarchar yesterday morning and now she took shelter to Natiyapara village in Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj, said wild life inspector Ashim Mallick.
Inspector Mallick is leading a four-member team to monitor the movement of the elephant. The team consists of two veterinary surgeons and a ‘mahut’, an elephant rider, trainer, or keeper.
He told The Independent over mobile phone that the elephant weighing about 5 metric tonnes became feeble for long journey and lack of adequate food.
While Abdur Rashid, union parishad member of Sinnarchar, said the elephant ate up banana trees and destroyed the jute and paddy fields during the last five days. Hundreds of villagers thronged there to see the elephant keeping a safe distance, he added.
Bangladesh forests authorities, meanwhile, have already written to the wildlife officials in India and a team of India will reach the spot shortly to rescue to elephant, sources said.
