Field-level officers asked to be alert

DCs’ conference begins tomorrow

Cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam yesterday said that the field-level officials have been asked to be alert in their respective areas, and to re-activate the core committees and the law and order committees to prevent possible militant attacks. “We sent letters to the field officials with the instructions recently,” he told reporters at a press conference on the conference of the deputy commissioners (DCs), which begins tomorrow. The field-level officials include divisional commissioners, DCs, and upazila nirbahi officers. During the four-day DCs’ conference, ministers will also give the same directions to the field officials. “There are core committees in all metropolitan areas, and the district and upazila levels,” he said. “The divisional commissioners will preside over the core committee meetings in the metropolitan areas while the DCs will head the core committees at the district level,” Alam added. The Cabinet secretary said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would inaugurate the DCs’ conference at Shapla Hall at the
Prime Minister’s Office at 10am tomorrow. “The PM will direct the field officials to implement government decisions, policies, and programmes properly and on time,” he said.
“During the 22 working sessions, the DCs will exchange views with ministers, advisers, and secretaries,” he added.
Alam said the divisional commissioners and DCs are expected to present 336 suggestions and recommendations on the working of 39 ministries. These would be placed before the working sessions for discussion.
Of the recommendations made by the DCs, land management, improvement of law and order, strengthening of local government institutions, disaster management, relief and rehabilitation activities, use of information and communication technology (ICT) and e-governance, and improvement of the quality of education, healthcare and family welfare, among others, would be discussed on a priority basis.
The Cabinet secretary added that the DCs would meet President Md Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban on Wednesday.
