The World Bank (WB) will provide the government a loan of $10 million to support its initiatives for improving the public procurement system, reports BSS.
The loan will fund the Second Additional Financing to Public Procurement Reform Project II.
An agreement to this effect will be signed between the government and the WB today (Monday) at the NEC conference room of the Economic Relations Divisions (ERD) in the capital city.
ERD additional secretary Kazi Shofiqul Azam and WB acting director Rajashree Paralkar will sign the agreement on their behalf.
According to a WB document, the objective of the project is to improve performance of the public procurement system progressively in Bangladesh, focusing largely on the target agencies.
The objectives will be achieved by strengthening the ongoing reform process and moving it further along with the following outputs: enhanced capacity in creating a sustained programme to develop skilled procurement professionals, strengthened management and monitoring of procurement in target agencies, introduction of e-Government Procurement (e-GP) in the Central Procurement Technical Unit (CPTU) and the target agencies on a pilot basis, and creation of greater public awareness of a well-functioning public procurement system by engaging civil society, think tanks, beneficiaries, and the private sector.
The project, which will be implemented by June 30, 2017, comprises four components, including furthering policy reform and institutionalizing capacity development, strengthening procurement management at sectoral level, introducing e- e-GP and communication, behavioral change, and social accountability.
