Two killed in road mishap
Two people were killed when a bus hit a CNG run auto-rickshaw on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway near the Lamakajibazar area in Sylhet city on Sunday morning.
The identity of the deceased could not ascertained immediately.
Akther Hussain, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad police station, said the accident took place when the speedy bus pushed the auto-rickshaw in the area around 9 am, leaving the auto-rickshaw driver dead on the spot and others injured child was died on the way to hospital. On information, police recovered the bodies.
After the incident local seized the bus and driver.
Kirat, Azan competitions end
The annual Kirat and Azan competitions of Bangladesh Navy were held at the mosque of Hazi Mohsin naval base at Dhaka Cantonment on Friday.
At the concluding day of the five day event, Assistant Navy chief Rear Admiral Mohammad Saiful Kabir distributed prizes among the winners as the chief guest, said an ISPR release.
High officials of Navy and a huge number of seamen were present. A total of 33 competitors from different ships and naval bases of the Bangladesh Navy took part in the competitions.
In Kirat competition, M Seul Islam of the Petrol Craft Squadron team stood first, MM Uddin, of the same team was second and M Abdal Hossen of Bangladesh Navy Ship (BNS) Shahid Moazzem team became third.
On other hand, YA Rasel of BNS Hazi Mohsin obtained first position, MA Aziz and M Yousuf Khan jointly stood second and M T Islam of BNS Mongla became third in the Azan competition.
UP chairmen take oath
The newly elected chairmen of 16 union parishads (UPs) under Sadar and Gangachhara upazilas in Rangpur took oath in a ceremony at conference room of the Deputy Commissioner here on Thursday afternoon
Organised by the district administration, Deputy Commissioner Md Rahat Anwar administered the oath-taking ceremony moderated by Deputy Director (Local Government) for Rangpur Sultana Parveen.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Dr ATM Mahbubul Karim, Office Secretary of district Awami League Tauhidur Rahman Tutul, Upazila Nirbahi Officers of Sadar and Gangachhara upazilas and Secretaries of the 16 UPs concerned were present.
67 held with yaba, liquor
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) in separate drives arrested 67 people from different areas under 16 thanas in the city on Friday night.
During the drives, the CMP also seized 2,794 pieces of yaba tablets and 562-kilogram liquor, said a release here yesterday. A total of seven cases were filed with the respective police stations.
Training for hajj pilgrims
Rangpur Hajj Training Centre and Haji Kallyan Sangstha (HKS) organised a daylong introductory meeting and training course for the Hajj pilgrims in the city on Saturday.
More than 300 male and female Hajj pilgrims, who will perform the holy religious ritual in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia this year, from all over the district, participated in the course held at Zila Parishad Community Centre in the city.
Founding President of HKS Alhaj Nafis Ahmed took part as the main discussant, conducted the training course and delivered the keynote speech on Arkan and Ahkam for performing Hajj correctly in the holy city of Mecca.
Initiator of the hajj training course and Adviser of HKS Alhaj Nazrul Islam Basunia delivered the inaugural speech while its General Secretary Alhaj Alamgir Hossain delivered welcome address.
