Flood situation worsens in north

STAFF REPORTER with OUR CORRESPONDENTS

The overall flood situation in the northern districts worsened yesterday due to incessant rain and rush of water from the upstream. The flood-affected areas are facing severe scarcity of food, drinking water and fuel.
Among the districts affected, Lalmonirhat, Sirajganj, Bogra, Jamalpur, Sunamganj, Kurigram and Gazipur are the worst hit.
Our Jamalpur correspondent reports: With the water level of the Jamuna rising continuously, the situation in the district has deteriorated. Floodwaters have affected four unions in Dewanganj upazila and five unions in Islampur upazila of the district.
In Kurigram, the Brahmaputra, Dharala, Teesta and the Dudhkumar rivers have kept on rising. Around 290 villages were inundated and around 3,930 families affected by erosion. People in other areas are passing their days in fear that they, too, would be affected.
Nearly two million people of 40 unions in Kurigram Sadar, Chilmari, Ulipur, Raumari, Rajibpur, Nageshwari, Phulbari upazilas have been suffering due to floods.
In Sirajganj, some of the low-lying areas of Sirajganj Sadar, Kajipur, Belkuchi, Chauhalan and Shahzadpur upazilas have been flooded. People in 40 unions have been marooned. The flood-affected people of char areas of the districts are suffering the most.
The picture is the same in Bogra district. Every day new areas of the district are being flooded. The Jamuna is flowing 18 to 20 cm above its danger level.
The flood situation in Sunamganj has deteriorated. Heavy rain in the district caused water to rise in rivers and haors.
In Lalmonirhat, the Teesta at the Dalia point was flowing 20 cm above the danger level. Most of the low-lying areas in Hatibandha, Kaliganj, Aditmari and Sadar upazila have gone under water.
Our Gazipur correspondent adds: Begunbari and Munshipara areas of Sreepur municipality in Gazipur have been waterlogged for the past two months due to incessant rain and lack of proper drainage system. At least 2,500 people are affected.
The municipal authorities have given orders to build roads and drains in the area. But work has not started due to rain and waterlogging.
