Indian stray elephant yet to be rescued

Sirajganj: The Indian wild elephant, which was washed into Bangladesh with floodwater from Assam through Roumari border in Kurigram about a month ago, could not be rescued as of yesterday, reports UNB.
The elephant took shelter in Charcinna area of Kajipur upazila of Sirajganj on Tuesday after roaming through Sariakandi and Dhunat upazilas of Bogra and Madarganj of Jamalpur, creating panic among locals.
It had been swimming in the Brahmaputra River since it entered the country on June 26 and sometimes took shelter in different char areas looking for food.
A four-member team of the Forest Department went to Charchinna area of Kajipur upazila on Friday to rescue the animal by making it unconscious with tranquiliser. But, it could not yet rescue the elephant.
Talking to reporters, team leader and wild animal inspector Asim Mallik said, “We’re monitoring the overall situation. It won’t be possible for us to move the big animal another place if we tranquilise it in the remote char area.”
He it needs to be taken to a riverbank so that it
could be shipped after tranquilising.
The Indian Forest Department was informed of the matter and it will be handed over to theme if they come here, he said.
