Incessant rains for the past three days submerged low lying areas in Rajshahi, Khulna and Barisal cities while it initially appeared as a welcome shower to relieve residents of sufferings from scorching heat. The civic lives almost came to a standstill as office-goers and school going children faced untold sufferings in three cities. Mechanised vehicles stopped moving in areas under water while many of those were seen stuck in waters with their engines downed in knee deep waters. In Rajshahi city, the rainfall started from Tuesday afternoon and continuing without break till filling this report at 12pm yesterday. Low lying area of the city, including at Zia Nagar, Chhoto Bangram, Mollapara, Dingadaba, Tikapara, Seroil and many others areas have been sub-merged due to water logging. Many roads like Miapara, Sotobongram, Malopara, Sagarpara area have been submerged.
Due to sufficient rain fall, the ponds, ditches, beels and water bodies also filled with water.
People, especially patients and their attendants, who came for treatment to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, are the worst sufferer for the rainfall. The main gate and surrounding areas of emergency department of RMCH went under knee deep water. Ashraful Alam, an officer of Rajshahi Met Office, said 51.60 mm of rainfall was recorded in last 36 hours.
Meanwhile, hundreds of office going people became stranded under knee deep water in Shaheb Bazaar, Talaimari, Railgate, Luxmipur and Bindurmor areas Monday morning. Jubayer Ahmed, owner of Rahmania Restaurant at Shaheb Bazaar area, said water entered his restaurant in the morning. That is why; he could not start his business till 10am. He further said due to nonstop downpour, they could not also sale their iftar items effortlessly from last three days.
Habibur Rahman, owner of HB Fashion of Shaheb Bazaar area, informed Eid shopping was geared up from the first day of Ramzan and its was continued three or four days, however; due to nonstop rainfall the business has become very slow.
Rickshaws and auto-rickshaws were seen stranded on submerged roads while rickshaw-pullers struggled to carry their passengers. Dr Alim Uddin, principal scientific officer of Rajshahi Fruit Research Centre, said the rainfall caused damage to fruits, vegetables and spices like papaya, patol, jhinga, gourd, bitter gourd, brinjal, green chili and various kinds of spinach.
Our Staff reporter adds from Khulna: Torrential rains coupled with a low created in the north Bay, adjacent to the Bangladesh coast has disrupted normal life and hampered business activities in Khulna and its adjoining districts over the last couple of days. The sky is overcast with heavy clouds. Almost all the low lying areas, residential houses, educational institutions, kitchen markets, slums and ground floors of most buildings of Labonchara, Miapara, Gallamari, Rupsha, Natunbazar and Harintana in the city have been affected severely by water logging.
Roads, lanes and bi-lanes in KDA Avenue, Royal and PTI intersection, Khanjahan Ali Road and some other low-lying areas in the city were also inundated. Pedestrians faced troubles while moving on city roads, as the roads became muddy due to the incessant rains. Most of the city dwellers confined themselves in their homes and very few transports plied city roads, demanding high fares from the passengers.
Besides, all sorts of business activities have remained been stranded due to the downpour that caused water-logging in most parts of the city. Officer-in-Charge of Khulna Met Office Md Amirul Azad said over cell phone that they recorded 32mm rainfall during the last 9 hours, starting from Thursday 6am to 3pm while they recorded 11 mm on Wednesday (June 24).
Meanwhile, the drainage system of Khulna city was greatly interrupted as rainwater could not pass through the drains properly due to their unplanned constructions. Chief Conservancy Officer of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Md Anisur Rahman said rain and waste water cannot pass through the drains and canals as those have been narrowed by the land sharks.
“We have been working since morning everyday in the rainy season to clean the drains from getting clogged, Conservancy Officer Anisur further said.
Witnesses said that many city areas went under knee-deep to waist deep water during the rainfall and business establishments in some low-laying areas were submerged by rain water.
Humayun Kabir, a hawker who sells his wares at Dakbangalow area under Sadar police station in the city said, “I had to keep my shop shut and I lost a day’s earnings.” Besides, the number of customers was thin at shopping malls, market places and other business establishments in the city.
In Barisal, heavy monsoon downpour paralysed the normal life in the city from Wednesday night to till filing the report.
Most of the people confined themselves inside the room and presence in educational institutions were less than normal days. Very few transports plied city roads demanding higher fare from the passengers.
Low lying areas of the city went under knee deep water due to lack of proper drainage and sewerage system, and over flooded river and canal banks, caused sufferings to the city dwellers.
Makeshift shops, hawker markets remained closed in most of the parts of the day and kitchen markets facing very few customers as people not coming out from home without emergency needs.
Abul Basher Majumdar, deputy director Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority said river port authority small water transports plying normally with less passengers and operators asked all including triple deck Barisal-Dhaka bound launches to ply cautiously due to inclement weather in the region.
From early morning it was found that almost all the roads of the city have gone under knee deep water. City dwellers did not come out from the houses due to rain. The rain water entered the houses of the city areas.
