Defending champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited will take on Arambagh Krira Sangha at 4:30 in the inaugural match of JB Bangladesh Premier League at MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong today.
In the other match of the day, Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra will face Uttar Baridhara Club at 7:30pm at the same venue in the port city. The first three round matches — a total of 18 matches — will take place at the Chittagong MA Aziz Stadium while the teams started to arrive at the Port City from Friday.
For the first time, Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) took the initiative to hold league matches in different venues for the decentralisation and started the tour from Chittagong. After that, the fourth round will be played in Mymensingh, Sylhet and at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital city.
However, in the last season, Sheikh Jamal clinched the top position with 51 points with a huge difference of the second positioned Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra who finished with 42 points.
Giants Mohammedan Sporting Club and Abahani Limited could not justify their names as they disappointed thousands of their followers across the country finishing the league on third and fourth positions respectively.
In fact, both the popular teams, who have supporters in whole country, could not shine for the last few seasons, specially, Mohammedan Sporting Club yet to taste the title of the Professional Football league since it was introduced in 2006-07.
Abahani Limited, though won the title for four times from the first edition in a row but were outshined by Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra in the rest four editions. This time it will be very tough for the traditional powerhouses of the domestic soccer to remain in the top in the championship fight, as this year apart from them, three other teams are ready to fight for the silverware.
Among the top fighters, Jamal will fight for the hat-trick championship while Sheikh Russel are adamant to recover their lost ground. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, who have already completed their last practice session yesterday at the Physical Education Ground in the port city when their manager Anwarul Karim Helal informed that the ground was not up to the mark but he was not at all disappointed.
Helal, when talking to this correspondent yesterday said, “Practice ground is not good enough, an uneven ground with long grass and no grasses in some places but I have no complaint, as it is the first time, and I hope in future everything will be okay.”
Helal, also satisfied with the hospitality of the organisers when he informed that they (organisers) are very cordial to help us for every requirements.
But Helal is a bit afraid of the main playground MA Aziz Stadium, where a concert was took place for the opening ceremony of the league and different materials used to erect the stage, were yet to be cleaned, which would be dangerous for the players during the matches. Apart from that, all are going smoothly to begin the top level soccer competition of the country at the MA Aziz Stadium.
