10 illegal bldgs demolished
A mobile court comprising police and an official of the concerned department demolished 10 big and small illegal structures in Ramarkanda area in Keraniganj upazila under Dhaka district on Friday.
The court, led by executive magistrate of Keraniganj and assistant commissioner of land Shamim Banu Shanti, conducted the demolition along a canal connecting the Singha River where the illegal structures were erected.
Court sources said, during the drive, the court knocked down 10 big and small buildings including shopping malls, a portion of Ispahani University and College building, Sharif Mansion, a four storey building and Agragami Tanti Samity Bhavan.
DU employee falls to death
A Dhaka University (DU) employee fell to his death from the third floor of a staff quarter building of the university in Nilkhet area yesterday morning in the capital.
The man, Abdul Wahab, 58, senior technical officer of transport sector of the DU, fell from the third floor around 6am while he was watering his garden, family and hospital sources said.
He was rushed to emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the attending doctors declared him dead.
Anti-militancy rally held
The students of Chittagong Government City College yesterday brought out a procession in Chittagong against militancy with slogan Jongibad Nipat Jak, Manobota Mukti Pak.
The procession started at 10am from the college premises and visiting different strategic points of city ended at 11am on the college Shaheed Minar premises.
The teachers of the college, hundreds of students, workers and employees along with banners-festoons were taken part in the procession against militancy.
After the procession in a brief rally at college Shaheed Minar Premises Principal of the college Jarna Khanam delivered speech as chief guest encouraging students against militancy while Professor Hazrat Ali delivered speech as special guest in the rally presided over Associate professor Mohammad Moinuddin, convener of the procession and the rally.
55 arrested in Rangpur
Police arrested 55 people, including four activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) and a local leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, from different places in the district on Thursday night, police sources said, reports BSS.
The arrested Shibir activists areMofizul Islam, 24, Mozaffar Hossain, 25, Abdus Sobhan, 24, and Rashedul Islam, 23, of Sadar upazila in Lalmonirhat district and Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain, 38, of Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur district.
The Jamaat-Shibir men were arrested from the different areas in Pirgachha upazila. They are charge sheeted in different cases, said Officer-in-Charge of Pirgachha Thana Aminul Islam.
3 peddlers held with phensidyl
During an anti-crime drive, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three alleged drug peddlers with 700 bottles of phensidyl and a truck at Rajabari checkpoint on Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway of the district Friday night, RAB sources said here yesterday.
The arrested persons were identified as Johirul Islam, 36, Badsha Sheikh, 28, and Alamgir Hossain, 30.
On a tip-off, a team of the elite force halted a Dhaka bound stone-laden truck and recovered the phensidyl after searching it. The operation team also seized the truck containing 433 square feet of stone and three mobile sets.
