‘Operation Irene’ complete at Chittagong airport

CHITTAGONG: Special drive- "Operation Irene", aimed at preventing trafficking of small arms, explosives and drugs in parcels at Chittagong Shah Amanat International Air Port was completed yesterday, reports BSS.
The Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (DCII) led the drive in cooperation with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Civil Aviation Authority.
Yesterday, on the last day of the seven-day long drive, DCII conducted search using a three-member dog squad of BGB, on the luggage's passengers on five international flights.
The search began at 6.30 am, first on an international flight. Then searches on another four international flights and five local flights were conducted. The operation ended at 4 pm. No illegal cargo was detected on the second day, a source said.
SM Shamimur Rahman, Deputy Director of DCII, said the special drive was carried out as part of an anti-smuggling campaign going on simultaneously in 33 other countries in the Asia Pacific region, coordinated by Regional Intelligence Liaison Office for Asia Pacific (RILO AP) and the intelligence wing of World Customs Organisation. Shamimur Rahman said other luggage's which directly came from foreign airports, underwent usual scanning, physical examination etc. So, they focused on the luggage's of the expatriate passengers during the special drive. The countrywide special drives started on July 8. The first drive was conducted at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
UNB adds: The fortnightly-long operation, codenamed ‘Irene’ to crack down on smuggling of small arms, explosives and drugs through the sea, land and air ports of the country ended yesterday.
   The Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (DCII) in association with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are conducting drives under the operation. On the concluding day yesterday, separate drives were conducted at Shah Amanat International Airport of Chittagong and Osmani International Airport of Sylhet.
