Rajshahi police begin search for absent students

Our Correspondent, Rajshahi

Rajshahi police have started a manhunt for students missing from their classes for a considerable period and are searching for their possible linkage with militant activities.
After the brutal murder of Prof. AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee, a teacher of the English department at Rajshahi University, by possible militants on April 23, law enforcers started an investigation against Shariful Islam, a student of the same department who was missing for a long time, claiming that he was involved with some terrorist organisations.
Recently, the police have arrested Muntasir Alam Anindo, another final-year student of the English department, in connection with the murder case. He was granted police remand in two phases. His involvement in terrorist activities is also being investigated.
Though the RU authorities have not commented on these two students, they have already started preparing a list of long-time absentees.
Prof. Mujibul Haque Azad Khan, proctor of Rajshahi University, said that the RU authorities, in accordance with the directives of the education ministry, are preparing a list of all students who have been absent from their classes and academic activities for a long time. He added that appropriate action will be taken against these students.
Meanwhile, no directive from the government has yet reached the authorities of private universities in this connection. However, local police have asked them to supply information about absent students.
Many private universities have also started preparing such lists on their own initiative. They are also conducting courses to enhance the moral values of the students. Private university authorities have become more proactive in this regard, especially after the Gulshan and Solakia attacks, said Prof. Nurul H. Chowdhury, pro vice-chancellor of Varendra University in Rajshahi.
Prof. Abdul Jalal, pro vice-chancellor of North Bengal International University of Rajshahi, said the university authorities are keeping tabs on all students on the campus and also investigating whether any student has remained missing from the campus for a long time.
Nisharul Arif, superintendent of police of Rajshahi, said the police are searching for those who have been people involved in providing funds to militants.
