‘Pather Panchali’, ‘Apur Panchali’ to be screened at BSA today

Satyajit Ray’s debut film ‘Pather Panchali’ (1955) --which is the first part of his hugely acclaimed ‘Apu Trilogy’ and Kaushik Ganguly’s ‘Apur Panchali’ will be screened today at 3pm the International Digital Cultural Archive Room of National Theatre Hall, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the city. The films will be screened as a part of ‘Asian Cinema Retrospective 2016’.
‘Pather Panchali’ depicts the childhood of the sibling protagonists Apu and Durga, as they lead a harsh village life with their poor family. Universally acclaimed for its realism and humanity portrayed through its masterful imagery, Pather Panchali (1955) is often described as a turning point in Indian cinema, pioneering the parallel cinema movement. The film stars Subir Banerjee, Kanu Banerjee, Karuna Banerjee, Uma Dasgupta, Chunibala Devi and Tulsi Chakrabarti.
On the other hand, Kaushik Ganguly’s ‘Apur Panchali’ follows the journey of Subir Banerjee the child actor who portrayed ‘Apu’ of Satyajit Ray’s masterpiece ‘Pather Panchali’. The events take place in two time periods, while the present day events are shot in colour the past events are in black and white. A comparison is drawn between Subir’s life and the Apu trilogy throughout the film. The film opens with a film school student Arka (Gaurav Chakrabarty) who comes to deliver a letter, an invite to attend a prestigious award ceremony in Germany to an older Subir Banerjee (Ardhendu Bannerjee).  The film stars Parambrata Chatterjee and Parno Mitra in lead roles.
After screening of films, the retrospective will feature discussions on Asian films and noted Asian filmmakers.
To note, Moviyana Film Society and BSA have jointly organised the festival ‘Asian Cinema Retrospective 2016’. The Retrospective sessions will take place on Friday and Saturday from 3 to 8pm. Every week three films will be screened alongside discussions. l
