Heads of the states and governments, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, President of the European Council, President of the European Commission and the Secretary General of ASEAN—all who attended the 11th Summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) held in Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar on July 15-16—have issued a statement on recent terrorist attacks in Europe and Asia and in many other places.
The leaders reiterated their strong unequivocal condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations of terrorism, said the statement.
The issuance of the statement in addition to the Ulaanbaatar Declaration, which also contains the issue fighting terrorism, reflects that the ASEM leaders are placing special emphasis on the menace affecting the world, said officials concerned.
Japan put forward the proposal to issue the statement, which was supported by France and the European Union, they said.
“Leaders reaffirmed their commitment to join forces to fight plaque of terrorism and underlined the need to bring justice those responsible for the attacks in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligation under international law,” the statement said.
The delegates, who attended the summit, expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, to the people and to the governments who have suffered from terrorist attacks resulting in the loss of the innocent lives in Nice, France, which was conducted only few hours before the summit.
ASEM, an Asian–European forum to enhance relations and various forms of cooperation between the countries, currently has 51 member states and regional organisations -- European Union and ASEAN Secretariat.
