Nahid alerts college students against ‘disease of militancy’

Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday called upon the principals of colleges to remain alert so that the disease of militancy cannot enter students at the college level. “We've to remain alert so that the disease of militancy can't influence college students. If any such element enters the system, steps have to be taken to curb it. We can't remain idle. We must work together here,” he said. Nahid was addressing a programme on ‘Peaceful Rally against Terrorism’, organised by National University (NU), at the Krishibid Institution of Bangladesh in the capital, as the chief guest. NU vice-chancellor Prof Dr Harun-or-Rashid was in the chair.  The minister observed that children from well-off families and modern educational institutions were getting involved in militant activities after being isolated from their own culture. He also said the reading of Bengali should be made compulsory at private universities and English-medium schools.
The education minister urged the principals and teachers of different colleges to remain alert so that the students at the college level cannot be involved in militancy. “Militancy can't be indulged at any rate. We've already given some directives. We'll give another directive regarding formation of committees at the college level to curb militancy. Each college will do whatever is possible on their part,” he added.
He also said the law alone cannot address such militancy issues; rather, a social movement is necessary. “Children from renowned educational institutions are being recruited into militant activities. There are even reports about some teachers being involved in such activities,” he added. The minister also urged guardians to keep an eye on their children. University Grants Commission  member Prof. Dil Afroza Begum said, “We're passing through a special situation. The colleges and universities have to play a bigger role here as they are working with the teenagers.”
