Ctg cop held for extortion

STAFF REPORTER, Ctg

A sub-inspector of the Industrial Police was detained while demanding money from a private insurance official yesterday (Thursday). The Kowtali police caught him and his associate red-handed. However, they were later released without any case being registered against them.
A team of the Kowtali police arrested sub-inspector Mahabubur Rahman and his associate Mohammad Farid at 11:00am from a branch of the Dutch Bangla Bank (DBB) at Jubilee Road in the city.
When asked why no case was filed against the two and why they were released, the officer-in-charge of Kowtali police station, Jashim Uddin, said: “Mahabubur has been handed over to the Industrial Police and it will take action against him. For this, we did not register any case. It was a case of misunderstanding.”
It is learnt that on Wednesday night, Ziaul Karim, an official of Sonali Life Insurance, was on his way to Halishahar from the city’s Sugandha area in an auto-rickshaw. Mahabub and Farid managed to hitch a ride in the vehicle, saying they too were headed for Halishahar. On the way, Mahabub disclosed his identity and threatened to arrest Ziaul on the false charge of possessing drugs.
They took Ziaul to Kadamtali and kept him in a hotel named Martin. The SI demanded Tk. 50, 000 from Ziaul and warned that he would be implicated in a false case. At around 9:00am, Ziaul told Mahabub to take him to the DBB's Jubilee Road branch, from where he would withdraw the money.
They reached the bank and Ziaul told them that the amount lying in his account was not sufficient to pay them, and that one of his friends would deposit money. When Mahabub and Farid were waiting for the money, Zaiul informed the Kowtali police. The police rushed to the bank and took the three to the police station.
