Bangladesh Hockey Federation (BHF) is likely to appoint Peter Gerhard of Germany as the national coach to guide the team for the AHF Cup.
Former Bangladesh national hockey team coach Gerhard, who led Dhaka Mariner Youngs Club to become champions in the Green Delta Premier Division Hockey League, now looked to be the only option for BHF after their first choice coach Zeil Bonnet from The Netherlands declined to come here.
Zeil Bonnet, the Dutch coach, who was supposed to arrive in Dhaka today has already informed the BHF on Tuesday about his unavailability.
The Dutch coach in a mail expressed his inability and he also talked to the BHF general sectary Abdus Sadeque over phone on Tuesday about his unavailability, citing the recent incident in Bangladesh, said that his family members and also friends strictly suggested him to refrain from traveling to Bangladesh.
General Secretary of the BHF when talking to The Independent yesterday informed that he had talked over phone with the Zeil Bonnet.
Sadeque said, “I talked with Bonnet Tuesday, he just says sorry to me saying ‘I would be happy if I could help Bangladesh, but due to the present situation none of my family members and friends allow me to travel to Bangladesh. In fact my children, wife and other close friends advised me to avoid Bangladesh.”
Sadeque, the veteran organiser, also said that right now they have an available option Peter Gerhard of Germany, who has also experienced working with Bangladesh team and recently the head coach of the Dhaka Mariner Youngs Club, who became champions under the German.
“So we have decided to appoint Peter.”
“Peter is also interested to work with us again and he already also sent mail and I talked with him yesterday. I requested Peter to bring another one coach as his deputy,” said Sadeque.
Meanwhile, the AHF Cup scheduled to take place from September 24 with eight teams- India Pakistan, South Korea, Japan, Oman, China, Sri Lanka and host Bangladesh.
