A mobile court in a drive arrested six persons for lifting sand illegally from the river Bonsai on Wednesday. The court also seized a trawler used for carrying the sand. The arrestees have been identified as Manik Mia, 20, of village Sarisadani in Nagarpur upazila of Tangail, Shah Alam Hawlader, 50, of village Beduria in Barisal district, Zakaria, 20, of Telkhadi in Patuakhali district, Mustafa Mia, 40, of village Alkolom and Rafique Bepari, 48, of village Balihari in Pirijpur district. Ayub Ali Khan SI of Mirzapur police station said acting on a tip-off, a mobile court, led by executive magistrate and AC land of Mirzapur Selim Reza, raided Chokleswar area and found some people lifting sand illegally from the River Bonsai. The court arrested them and seized a trawler. Selim Reza said two electricity poles supporting the national grid that stand on the bank of the river came under threat from illegal quarrying of the sand. The ring leader of the gang could not be arrested.
