100 MW from Tripura by December end

FAISAL MAHMUD

The much anticipated 100 MW of electricity from Tripura, India, could come to Bangladesh by the end of December. The State-owned Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited (PGCBL) and the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) have already completed nearly 60 per cent of the transmission network.
Talking with The Independent, Masum Al Biruni, Managing Director, PGCBL, said that two separate firms are building the transmission lines for importing electricity from India. Korean contractor GS Engineering and Construction Ltd is building a 132 KV transmission line and Indian contractor KEC International is building a 400 KV line.
GS Engineering and Construction is constructing a 28 km transmission line from Comilla (South) Substation to Tripura Board and KEC International is constructing a 19 km transmission line from Comilla (South) Substation to Comilla (North) Substation.
“The 400 KV transmission line has scope for importing more electricity from India’s eastern grid. Both contractors have completed nearly 60 per cent of their work. We expect the whole transmission network to be completed by December,” said Al Biruni.
Project Director MD Shafiullah informed that GS Engineering and Construction had already laid out 18 km of its transmission line and KEC international had laid out 11 km.
“The installation work for the transmission network is going on very smoothly,” he said, adding that the 100 MW of imported power would meet the demand from South Comilla, which includes Comilla South Sadar (the district’s load centre), Jangalia and BSCIC area.
He said that no high voltage direct current (HVDC) substation will be constructed for this project because it is not financially viable to set one up for importing only 100 MW of electricity.
Shafiullah said that officials and engineers of PGCBL, PGCIL, Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) and Bangladesh Power Development Board are in constant contact to complete the transmission lines on schedule.
Meanwhile, the Indian Express has reported that the PGCIL has completed 20 of the 65 transmission towers in southern and western Tripura. The remaining 45 transmission towers and related works would be completed by December.
Quoting Tripura Power Minister Manik Dey, the Indian Express said that human habitations, forests and other vital installations would be avoided while erecting the new towers between western Tripura’s Surjyamaninagar power grid and Comilla power grid in eastern Bangladesh.
India started work on supplying power to Bangladesh in 2013 after the government-run Bangladesh Power Development Board and India’s NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN), a subsidiary of NTPC, signed an agreement to supply electricity in February 28, 2012. The two countries had reached an understanding in this regard during Sheikh Hasina’s visit to New Delhi in January 2010.
