Tk 2178cr budget approved for 37 public universities

University Grants Commission (UGC) yesterday approved a budget of Tk 2,178.84 crore for the 2015–16 fiscal for 37 public universities across the country. The budget was approved at its 141st Full Commission Meeting and UGC Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan chaired it. The chairman also approved the revised budget of Tk 2,053.55 crore for FY 2014–15 for the public universities. The meeting also approved the original budget of Tk 24.01 crore for the FY 2015–16 as well as the revised budget of Tk 21.24 crore for FY 2014–15 for UGC itself. However, UGC Chairman Abdul Mannan told The Independent that he would have preferred higher budgetary allocation for the public universities. “This cannot be called an adequate allocation for the public universities. Had we got more budgetary allocation, it would have been better. Expenditure in the public universities had increased but the budget has not increased accordingly. However, we have to work within this budgetary limitation,” he said. It was also revealed that the UGC has signed agreements to implement five university-industry collaborative research projects. These collaborations are between professors from four public universities of the country and renowned researchers. The projects aim to develop an innovation ecosystem in Bangladesh. In his speech the UGC Chairman said, “The collaborative research between universities and industries has been practised in developed countries for a long time. Industries finance and assist universities for collaborative research but this practice is almost nil in Bangladesh.” He said that the four universities will benefited immensely from these joint projects with the five researchers. Education Secretary Md Nazrul Islam Khan and Planning Commission (Socio-economic Infrastructure) Member Md Humayun Khalid attended the meeting. Several UGS members also attended, including: Professor Dr Mohammad Mohabbat Khan, Professor Dr Abul Hashem,  Professor Dr Md Akhtar Hossain, Professor Dr Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah and Professor Dr Dil Afroza Begum.
