Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Dr Mizanur Rahman yesterday said the state must take responsibility for the victims of human trafficking, reports UNB.
“We have heard some serious allegations against some registered travel agencies of the country. The state must take responsibility for those victims of human trafficking who have been cheated by registered travel agencies of the country,” Dr Mizanur said.
“Those registered recruiting agencies are not only involved in human trafficking, they are also involved in modern day slavery which is one of the worst, and filthiest crimes known to humanity. They cannot be kept outside the law whatsoever,” he added.
The NHRC head came up with the remarks while addressing a public hearing titled “The Victims of Torture: Context of Migration and Human Trafficking from Bangladesh”, marking United Nations Day against Torture 2015 at Jatiya Press Club.
Rights Jessore and SHISUK jointly organized the program, which was chaired by Executive Director of the Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) at Dhaka University Dr CR Abrar.
At the hearing, Abdur Razzaq, Shathi Begum, Minara Begum and Shohag - all ill-fated returnees from different countries of the Middle East who fell victim to human trafficking by some registered recruiting agencies, shared some of their experiences.
They alleged Bangladesh Export Corporation (registration number RL-803), Career Overseas Consultant (RL-403), Khan Tours and Travels (RL-1090) Morning Sun and some other registered agencies are directly involved in human trafficking, torturing, and slavery, as they lured innocent people into going abroad with fake visas and documents.
One of the returnees from Iraq also alleged the Bangladesh envoy to Iraq and some high officials of the embassy are also involved in this criminal enterprise, sharing direct ties with representatives of the recruiting agencies.
Among others, Deputy Attorney General Advocate Motaher Hossain Sazu, Executive Director of Rights Jessore Binoy Krishna Mallik, and Executive Director of SHISUK Sakiul Millat Morshed spoke on the occasion.
Mizanur Rahman urged the foreign minister to talk to returnee victims, apart from investigating their allegations to find out whether high officials of the country are carrying out their duties, or involved in anti-state business.
Reminding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of her pledge of ‘zero tolerance’ to human trafficking, the NHRC boss urged her to make good on her promise.
