Country to achieve self-reliance on fish production, say experts

RANGPUR: Fisheries experts at a post-rally discussion here yesterday said Bangladesh would achieve self-reliance on fish production within tenure of the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, reports BSS.
They made the forecast while addressing the discussion arranged by the Fisheries Department at Town Hall auditorium to observe the weeklong National Fisheries Week-2016 programmes.
The weeklong programmes include colourful rallies, releasing fish fries, discussions, seminars, awareness building and motivational activities with a renewed call and fresh strategies for further developing the prospective fisheries sector.
Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hassan Ahmed inaugurated the weeklong observance by releasing balloons at Deputy Commissioner’s Office premises in presence of Deputy Commissioner Rahat Anwar.
Later, a huge rally participated by officials and employees of the administration, Fisheries Department, fishermen, teachers, students, fish farmers, owners of pisciculture farms and hatcheries paraded the city streets carrying banners, placards and festoons.
Additional Divisional Commissioner (Revenue) Abdul Mazid attended the post-rally discussion as the chief guest with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Dr ATM Mahbubul Karim in the chair.
Moderated by Sadar Upazila Fisheries Officer Mahfuzur Rahman, Project Director of the ‘Fisheries Development Project for Rangpur Division’ Md Nazrul Islam, Organising Secretary of district Awami League Motahar Hossain Mandal Mowla, hatchery owners, fishermen and fish farmers addressed the discussion.
District Fisheries Officer Dr Zillur Rahman delivered welcome speech narrating success achieved in increasing fish production in the district where the farmers produced 25,500 lakh tonnes fish last year against annual demand of 63,000 tonnes.
“The country produced 36.84 lakh tonnes fish during 2014-15 against annual demand of 42 lakh tonnes as its production increases by one lakh tonnes annually to achieve self-reliance soon following various pragmatic steps taken by the government,” he said.
Nazrul Islam said the Prime Minister has put emphasis on meeting nutritional demand of the population by increasing production of fish, meat, milk and eggs after attaining self-reliance on rice and turning Bangladesh into a food surplus country.
The chief guest asked all concerned for ensuring proper utilisation of all water bodies and transferring latest pisciculture technology among the farmers to protect the native, small and indigenous fishes from extinction and to further enhance fish production.
Later, he distributed prizes among the best fishermen, fish farmers and hatchery owners in different categories and released fish fries in the pond water at Rangpur Central Jail premises in the city.
