HC verdict July 28

STAFF REPORTER
HC verdict July 28

The High Court (HC) yesterday fixed July 28 for delivering its verdict on the death reference and appeals filed by 10 members of the banned Islamist militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) against their death penalty for the suicide bomb attack on the Gazipur court premises on November 29, 2005.
After reviewing the final arguments from both sides, the HC bench, comprisING JusticeS M Enayetur Rahim and JBM Hassan, set the date for the delivery of verdict.
In the final arguments, deputy attorney general Shaikh AKM Moniruzzaman Kabir told the court that the allegations brought against the convicts have been proved beyond reasonable doubt, and their convictions and death sentences should be confirmed in consideration of the gravity of their offences.
On the other hand, defence lawyers prayed to the HC to reduce the death sentences of the convicts to life imprisonment, claiming that they regret their offences.
According to the case statement, on November 29 in 2005, suicide bomber Md Nazir Hossain (alias Shariat Ullah of Gaibandha), had walked into the office on the ground floor of the Hall Building-2 at the Bhawal Rajbari court and detonated the bomb strapped to his body, killing nine people and injuring scores of others. The bombing was apparently a part of JMB's attack on the judiciary.
On June 20, 2013, a Dhaka court sentenced 10 members of the JMB to death for carrying out the suicide attack.
The death reference of the case reached the HC from the trial court seven days after the court awarded death penalty to the convicts.
