Family members to undergo DNA test

Family members to undergo DNA test

Family members of the six militants killed will have to undergo DNA test if they want to take the bodies. Police officers said they want to hand over the bodies only after verifying their identities through DNA sampling. No family has so far approached the authorities for this, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) deputy commissioner Masudur Rahman told reporters at the DMP's media centre yesterday. "If the families do not communicate with us, we'll keep the bodies some more days at the Combined Military Hospital(CMH) in the city," he said. He, however, did not specify how many days.
About collection of DNA samples from the bodies, Rahman said: "Earlier, we submitted a prayer before the court concerned to carry out forensic tests. As per the court order, we'll conduct tests that are possible in the country. For tests that are not possible in Bangladesh, some samples would be sent to the laboratory of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)."
Earlier in the day, doctors collected fresh blood samples of the six militants to ascertain if they took any stimulant or drug before carrying out the July 1 Gulshan café carnage. A forensics team of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) collected the samples from the CMH.
“We collected blood and hair samples from the six bodies,” Dr Sohel Mahmud, assistant professor of the forensic and medicine department at DMCH, told journalists.
This is the second time the authorities have collected blood samples of the assailants following a request from the special Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit of the DMP.
The bodies of the six attackers are still at the mortuary of the CMH as no one came to take them till yesterday, the police said.
Four of the militants were identified as Nibras Islam, Rohan Imtiaz, Meer Sabeh Mubasheer and Khairul Islam Payel, while another was unknown. Apart from the five, the body of chef Saiful Islam, who is also an FIR-named accused, is at the mortuary.
The RAB yesterday published a list of 261 youths who recently went missing from different districts of the country. The elite force posted the list on its Facebook page around 12:33am on Wednesday. Photographs of the 50 missing children were also uploaded.
Of the missing youths, 74 are from Dhaka district, 32 from Chittagong, 29 from Jhenidah, 14 from Jessore, nine from Feni, nine from Rangpur, eight from Kishoreganj, six from Chandpur, six from Noakhali, four from Cox's Bazar and four from Chapainawabganj.
In the post, the RAB also asked citizens to contact their nearest RAB battalion or camp if they come across any of the missing people. A phone number – 01777720050 – was also provided for direct contact.
RAB also sought information through the page -- www.facebook.com/rabonlinemediacell/ or email at [email protected].
On July 1, the nation witnessed one of the worst terror attacks in its history, as gunmen attacked Holey Artisan Bakery, an upscale eatery on Road 79 of Gulshan, killing 20 diners after a 12-hour hostage situation. Two police officers also died trying to clear the restaurant.
