State-run Sylhet Gas Fields Ltd (SGFL) has declared to abandon the exploratory Well 10 of Rashidpur Gas Field as it couldn’t unearth any gas reserve there despite a three month long effort.
Earlier in July 1 last year, the government decided to give Russian energy giant Gazprom the task of drilling five gas wells, ignoring the state-owned gas and oil exploration company Bapex even though the latter could have finished the work in half the price of Gazprom. Rashidpur well 10 is one of those five wells.
Gazprom’s drilling of the five wells will cost around Tk150 crore per well, whereas Bapex could do the same job for Tk70-80 crore per well. Talking with The Independent, SGFL Managing Director Nizam Shariful Islam said "We have drilled almost three kilometers beneath the earth’s surface.”
“We have drilled some 2,900 metres (into the well) and the analysis of the data found showed no signs of existence of gas. So, we decided to declare the well abandoned,” he said.
“I think the drilling location was faulty. A three dimensional seismic survey conducted in Rashidpur had suggested gas reserves there,” he added.
As per the initial analysis, this site was supposed to supply 30 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.
The five gas wells to be drilled under the contract – Bakhrabad 10, Rashidpur 9, 10 and 12, Srikail 4 – are owned by three different state-owned companies.
Earlier, Bapex dug three explorations well in Comilla’s Srikail separately in 2004, Sunetra structure in Sunamganj-Netrakona in 2012, Kapasia in Gazipur in 2011 but could not find any gas reserves at the sites.
