Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan yesterday asked the launch owners to install closed circuit (CC) TV cameras and keep metal detectors in their vessels to ensure passengers’ security, reports UNB.
He came up with the call while addressing a programme marking the launching of new launch ‘MV Parabat-12’ at Sadarghat Launch Terminal in the capital.
The minister also asked all to strictly follow the approved designs while constructing launches.
Mentioning that the government wants to cut the river route accidents down to zero, he instructed the vessel owners, workers and others concerned to remain alert in this respect.
Shajahan informed that the Shipping Ministry is working to procure 20 more dredgers that will be in operation alongside 14 ones collected earlier.
The government is likely to get World Bank (WB) loan assistance worth Tk 3,200 crore for developing river ports and excavating river channels, he added. Presided over by Rabeya Shipping Company’s chairman Sahidul Islam Bhuiyan, the launching ceremony was also addressed by chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Md Mizanur Rahman and director general of Shipping Department Commodore M Zakiur Rahman Bhuiyan.
