An alleged robber was killed as a crude bomb, which he attempted to throw at a police vehicle, exploded in his hand at Velua Bridge on Rangpur-Dhaka highway in Mithapukur Upazila early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Nurul Islam, 32, an accused in six cases. Police also arrested five alleged robbers from the spot. Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Mithapukur police station, said a police team in a microbus was patrolling Rangpur-Dhaka highway. Police challenged a gang for their suspicious movement in Velua Bridge area around 4.30am yesterday. At one stage, Nurul attempted to hurl a crude bomb at a police vehicle but it exploded in his hand. He died on the spot. Police chased the gang and detained five of them. Police also seized a country-made pistol and crude bombs from their possessions. Abdur Razzak, SP, Rangpur, said Nurul was accused in 6 robbery cases.
