The novel ‘Gone Girl’ by Gillian Flynn is an intense psychological thriller, with numerous unexpected twists and turns.
The story revolves around Nick Dunne and his wife, Amy. Nick and Amy lost their jobs because of economic recession, and they have moved to Nick’s hometown in Missouri. With the passage of time, the once-pleasant relationship between the couple begins to deteriorate, and they start drifting apart.
However, things take an unexpected turn when, on their 5th marriage anniversary, Amy mysteriously disappears. Everybody is puzzled. With the passage of time, secrets are revealed, things take unpredictable turns, and nothing seems to be the way it originally appeared to be.
The novel is narrated by both Nick and Amy, and I admired its narrative structure and style. It is actually the narrative structure that contributes a lot to make the novel as twisted as it is. Secrets and twists are revealed one after another. I was left wide-eyed with surprise and bewilderment.
What started as a mere mystery novel, eventually developed into a dark and unpredictable psychological thriller as the story unfolded and unraveled its mysteries. The turns that the story kept taking were completely unpredictable. Overall, it was a novel that I really enjoyed reading.
