Call to preserve extinct, indigenous fish species

Speakers at the discussion in Rajshahi called for preserving extinct and indigenous fish species to increase production in achieving self-reliance by rural people cutting poverty besides meeting nutritional demand.
In observance the National Fisheries Week-2016, a discussion meeting jointly organised by Zila fisheries Department and Zila Administration at Rajshahi Shilpakala Academy auditorium on Wednesday morning.
The meeting participated by officials and employees of administrations, Fisheries Department, Business leaders, Government and non-government organisations, fish farmers, hatchery owners, teachers, students and many others.
Fazle Rabbi, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi presided over the programme where lawmaker Fazle Hossain Badsha was present as the chief guest at meeting. However; Sultan Abdul Hamid, Additional Divisional Commissioner (Development) of Rajshahi and Moniruzzaman, Deputy Director of Fisheries department were attend as special guest.
The speakers stressed for proper utilisation of all water bodies including beels, haors, ponds and flood plains through bring those under fish cultivation ensuring best use of the existing natural resources to make the nation self-sufficient in fish production.
They called upon all concerned for transferring latest pisciculture technology among farmers to protect the native fishes including the small indigenous ones from extinction and enhancing fish production to meet up the increasing protein demands.
However; a colourful rally was brought out from and paraded various streets of the city to mark the day. Earlier, the programme of the National Fisheries Week-2016 was inaugurated by fish fry release programme in water of Padma River.
