50,000 BNP men in jail now: Khaleda

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday said around 50,000 leaders and activists of her party are facing extreme sufferings in prisons and thousands of others are passing inhuman lives on the run to avoid arrest in ‘false’ cases.
“The government eliminated the movement for free and fair election in a fascist manner resulting many opposition leaders and activists are still unaccounted for…Even pious ulemas (Islamic scholars) were not spared from savage killings,” she said in a statement to mark the International Anti-Repression Day yesterday.
The former premier also said the rulers of a country take the path of repression to resist the opposition forces to cling to power where democratic system is fragile and authoritative rules in introduced by snatching the voting right of people. “Bangladesh is also not different from it,” she said.  The BNP chairperson alleged that, after the present government came to power, many opposition leaders and activists were killed, abducted or subjected to enforced disappearance and become victims of secret killings.

She said the rule of law is absent in the country and fundamental rights are trampled.
She expressed her solidarity with all the torture victims both at home and abroad, and said, “A united effort by all democracy-loving people will ensure the defeat of the evil forces working against humanity.”
She hoped that the defeat of anti-human forces could be ensured through united efforts of all democratic people in the world.
Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia attended the iftar party of Jamaat-e-Islami, a major ally of BNP-led 20-party alliance at a city hotel yesterday.
Organizers said that the BNP chairperson could bots peat at the function because of her late arrival due to traffic congestion on her way to the hotel.
