Shakib regains top all-rounder spot in all three formats

Sports Reporter

Shakib Al Hasan has regained the number one spot in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI all-rounders after inspiring Bangladesh to their first bi-lateral series victory over India on Wednesday.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) released the latest ODI rankings yesterday, a day after Bangladesh’s home series against India ended. With the latest rankings, Shakib now simultaneously holds the top all-rounder spot in all three formats of the game.

The prolific 28-year-old all-rounder scored 123 runs in the three-match home series against India (52, 51 not out, and 20) and bagged three wickets for 99 runs (including a best performance of two for 33 in the first ODI in Muimur). His all-round performance also helped Bangladesh move to the seventh position in the Reliance ICC ODI Team Rankings.
Shakib pushed his ranking points to 408 at the end of bilateral series. Sri Lankan Tilkarantne Dilshan closely followed Shakib in second position with 404 points. The Lankan has a good prospect to overtake Shakib after upcoming three-match series with Pakistan at home.
Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews was in third position with 378 points. James Faulkner of Australia and Mohammad Hafeez of Pakistan were in fourth and fifth position with 361 and 343 points respectively.
The just completed series, which Bangladesh won 2-1, also saw the emergence of 19-year-old Mustafizur Rahman who, in his debut series, was the highest wicket-taker. He claimed 13 wickets sparing 150 runs and is set for a bright career after an impressive start.
India’s Ravichandran Ashwin has moved up two places into the 10th spot in the Reliance ICC Players Rankings for ODI bowlers after claiming six wickets for 118 runs in the series. Ashwin is now just 12 points behind South Africa’s Morne Morkel, while Shakib has retained his eighth place ranking.
Bangladesh medium pacer Taskin Ahmed also moved up eight places into 96th. Indian duo Akshar Patel and Suresh Raina are the other names posting notable raise in the rankings with both the players gaining five points each to move to 71st and 95th positions respectively. Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan slipped one spot to seventh in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI batsmen although he was the leading run-getter in the series against Bangladesh. His slip was due to some heavyweight batting display by New Zealand’s Kane Williamson against England.
However, Dhawan holds a sizeable 43-point advantage over his captain MS Dhoni who is in eighth place after scoring 121 runs in the series, including a highest score of 69.
Suresh Raina has also improved his ranking by two places to 18th. Bangladesh batsman Soumya Sarkar has vaulted 15 places to a career high of 51st after scores of 54, 34 and 40 and the other notable movers include Shakib (up two places to 31st) and Nasir Hossain (up three places to 38th).
