The authorities of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) yesterday closed the university for indefinite period after ‘attack and vandalism’ on its academic buildings by agitating students demanding postponement of examinations.
The authority also asked the students to vacate their halls and dormitories by 5pm yesterday.
A circular signed by BUET Registrar professor AKM Masud was issued in this regard.
“A group of students on Tuesday besieged the offices of vice-chancellor, registrar and students’ welfare director, demanding that term final examinations be postponed. The students also blocked the teachers’ residential area and on Wednesday night they vandalised and set fire on the academic building,” said the circular.
All the academic activities of the university has been suspended for an indefinite period for maintaining overall discipline, restoring good academic atmosphere and ensuring the security of lives and property of teachers, students and officials, the notice adds.
BUET Students’ Welfare Director Delwar Hossain said, “The students were not agreeing to attend exams amid Ramzan. That’s why they resorted to vandalism, forcing the authority to shut down the university amid instable situation.”
He said generally the term final exams are held twice a week but one exam was set during Ramzan. Some students launched a movement demanding no exams amid Ramaan, he added.
Semester exams of different departments were scheduled to be held on June 27. The students were demanding for the postponement of the exams. When the authority did not pay heed to them, some students allegedly resorted to vandalism.
Meanwhile, the students faced serious problems for the sudden directives to vacate the eight residential halls due to day long drizzling and Ramzan.
Meanwhile, chairman of University Grants Commission Prof Abdul Mannan expressed deep concern over the incidents of BUET and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) and Islamic university (IU) for the unrest.
He urged the concerned authority to take immediate steps to resolve the crises in the public universities.
