The BNP is formulating a framework to bring all parties outside the ruling alliance on a single and united platform, the BNP secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has told reporters.
He was visiting the ailing party leader, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, at Square Hospital in the city yesterday (Friday) morning.
“We are already in the process of forging national unity to fight terrorism and militancy. The party chairperson has begun talks with people from all quarters as part of her initiative for forging national unity against terrorism and militancy,” he said.
The BNP leader said the party chairperson would fix the strategy to fight terrorism and militancy on the basis of the outcome of the talks.
Asked whether the BNP would sever ties with the Jamaat, he walked away without commenting.
Speaking at a meeting at the Jatiya Press Club, the BNP standing committee member, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, said the government has created a smoke-screen about national unity as they are not sincere in curbing militancy. He accused the government of creating incidents, thereby making the people panic stricken and pushing them to a state of insecurity.
The BNP leader said questions have arisen as to whether the government's people were involved in the recent spate of militant attacks as they are not responding to the call of the BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, for national unity.
