Bangladesh, as the spokesperson and coordinator of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in the forthcoming UNCTAD ministerial conference, would bargain with the developed nations to get maximum trade and other facilities, reports BSS. "We would negotiate with the ministers of developed countries during different sessions in the conference to maximize the benefit for the LDCs", Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed told the news agency. The minister is scheduled to leave Dhaka for Nairobi yesterday, leading 15-member team to the 14th Ministerial Conference of United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), which will begin in Kenya's capital on July 17 and continue till July 22.
"If we could convince the developed countries about our (LDCs) needs, it would reflect in different policy making decisions that might go in favour of LDCs," Tofail said.
The week-long conference will bring together heads of state and government, ministers and other prominent players from the business world, civil society and academia to tackle global trade and economic development issues.
The conference will have debates, high-level round tables, thematic events, a World Investment Forum and a Civil Society Forum, among other events. The theme of the conference is "Moving towards an inclusive and equitable global economic environment for trade and development".
Four sub-themes have also been included with the main one. These are: challenges and opportunities in multilateralism for trade and development; promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth through trade and investment, finance and technology to achieve prosperity for all; advancing economic structural transformation and cooperation to build economic resilience and address trade and development challenges and opportunities levels within the UNCTAD mandate; and contributing to the effective implementation of and follow up to the sustainable development.
Apart from the main event, few parallel events would be held from July 15 to July 22.
