A total of 93 women and 49 children were tortured to death in the last three months, said a report Bangladesh Society for the Enforcement of Human Rights (BSEHR). Data from the research cell of BSEHR reveals that 16 women were killed for dowry, 46 were murdered in the hands of husbands, 3 house-maids were killed while two were tortured, family disputes claimed lives of 9 women and 103 women and children were raped in the last three months. Nine of the female rape victims were also killed.
During this period, 72 women committed suicide, among them 2 house maids. Besides, bodies of 10 unidentified women were found. In the same three months, 49 children were killed and 83 others were tortured.
BSEHR Chairman Sigma Huda said positive attitude towards women should be highlighted for the development of women’s status in the society.
“Women should reduce dependency to widen the path for their own empowerment. Respect for women in the society and courage will show women right path to live,” he said.
Executive director of the rights body Mostofa Sohel said rights of women and children are being endangered due to discrimination against women, lack of social awareness, lack of family ties, misuse of information technology and above all, due to lack proper enforcement of laws. Women and children repression must be stopped through social movement and implementation of strict laws, he said.
