Bangladesh united against terrorism

Voicing her firm determination to find out the roots of recent terror acts in the country, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday told her Japanese counterpart Shinjo Abe that a consensus has developed among the people of Bangladesh against terrorism, reports UNB. The Prime Minister said this during a meeting with Abe on the sidelines of Asia-Europe Summit (Asem).
"A national consensus has developed in Bangladesh as intelligent and conscious people are very active to overcome the situation," she told the Japanese Prime Minister.
Emerging from the meeting, PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said Abe expressed a strong determination and solidarity with Bangladesh to combat terrorism.
Sheikh Hasina reiterated her condolences for the Japanese nationals who fell victim to the recent terror attack in a Gulshan restaurant.
Abe assured his Bangladesh counterpart of his government's determination to continue all the ODA projects and sharing information to know the background of terror attacks in Bangladesh.
He also expressed gratitude to Sheikh Hasina for showing her immense sympathy and solidarity to the families of the victims after the Gulshan attack.
Condemning the barbaric attack, Abe said the ASEM will deliver a strong message that they will not tolerate terrorism and denounce in one voice that terrorist act.
Hasina said the people of both Japan and Bangladesh along with the citizens from a number of friendly countries who were working for the development of Bangladesh have lost their lives in the Gulshan incident.
"We consider Japan a tasted friend and development partner. So, I have given instruction to all the authorities concerned to ensure the safety and security of the people, including the Japanese nationals, who are working in various sectors in Bangladesh," she said.
Later in the day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government would take help from Russia, if necessary, in combating terrorism and militancy during a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev held on the sidelines of the Asem Summit.
Medvedev proposed to stay beside Bangladesh during its critical time if there is any terrorist attack
and will extend all sorts of support, including technical one, in combating terrorism and militancy. Briefing reporters, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque said various issues on bilateral interests came up for the discussions at the meeting.
Besides, both the Prime Ministers expressed satisfaction over the progress of constructing Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and agreed to take steps whatever necessary to complete the construction of the power plant within the stipulated time.
Earlier in the morning, Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni Silveri called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Bangladesh office of the summit venue.
He expressed satisfaction over the steps taken by the Bangladesh government in tackling the Gulshan tragedy and sending the dead bodies of Italian nationals instantly.
The Foreign Minister said the relations between Bangladesh and Italy are very old and so many Bangladeshis are living in Italy. “So, the ties won’t be hampered due to Gulshan incident,” Paolo added.
Rather, the Italian Foreign Minister said, steps would be strengthened in the fields of development, investment and trade with Bangladesh.
Silveri conveyed Sheikh Hasina the message of the Italian Prime Minister that Rome is equally shocked at the Gulshan terrorist attack.
In response, the Prime Minister told the Foreign Minister that the government and people of Bangladesh will jointly fight the twin menace —terrorism and militancy — in the country.
The Prime Minister also talked to Swiss President Johan Schneider Ammann and other leaders.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina along with other head of states and governments joined Mongol Nadam Festival at ‘Chinggis Khaan Khuree’ tourist complex on the city’s outskirts in the afternoon.
Naadam Festival is Mongolian major holiday and a wonderful national festival to experience the culture and people of Mongolia. The festival has its roots in the nomad wedding assemblies and hunting extravaganzas of the Mongol Army.
Later, she joined a dinner hosted by Mongolian President Tskhiazin Elbegdorj in honour of the ASEM leaders.
Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque said Asem leaders in a stock taking session discussed the progress achieved over the two decades in three pillars — political, economic and people-to-people contact.
“The ASEM leaders discussed the relevance of the forum and focused on four areas of cooperation in next decade, such as reinforcing the partnership between Asia and Africa continents, strengthening cooperation in anti-terrorism activities and radicalisation, human
development and taking substantive initiatives to achieve sustainable development goals (SDG),” he added.
Prime Minister will take part in the retreat session of the Asem Summit today and also hold bilateral meetings with a number of world leaders.
