Young woman abused over dowry
Rumpa, the victim lies at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital bed.

Rifah Tasfia Salam Rumpa, a young woman, married for love. Yet, little did she know that her dreams would soon be shattered.
After one-and-a-half years of constant domestic abuse—both physical and mental—she has been admitted to the One Stop Crisis Centre (OCC) of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) with almost her entire body covered with bandages. Doctors said she suffered multiple fractures as a result of the merciless beating by her husband.
Rumpa's mother Hosne Ara Parvin claimed that Samiul Haque Soad, the victim's husband, had severely beaten her with a GI pipe last Monday, as she expressed her inability to bring dowry from her family.
According to family members, Rumpa eloped with Haque and married him one-and-a-half-years ago. Her parents recognised the marriage six months later. However, Haque began to ask his wife for money within a few months of their marriage.
After a child was born to the couple, Haque became furious and demanded Tk. 3 lakh as dowry from his wife.
Rumpa was taking care of her child on Monday noon. Suddenly, Haque, in a bout of anger, started beating her mercilessly for her failure to bring in dowry.
Even though Rumpa never disclosed anything to her family about the daily abuse, this time Haque's family members informed her parents about the incident and they rushed to Haque's house with other relatives. They discovered her lying in a pool of blood inside her room and took her to the hospital.
RMCH deputy director Gazi Saiful Alam Chowdhury told The Independent that Rumpa suffered one fracture in her skull, two in her chest, two in her right hand, two in her left hand, and another in her left leg.
Hosne Ara Parvin filed a case against Haque and his family members at Rajpara police station. After the filing of the case, police took action and arrested Haque, a degree student of Rajshahi New Government Degree College.
Ifte Khayer Alam, an official of Rajpara police station, said Haque denied the charge of demanding dowry and cited a ‘family feud’ as the reason for beating his wife. “According to our investigation, it's a case of dowry-related domestic abuse. We've arrested Haque and are trying to arrest the other accused in the case,” he added.
While talking to this journalist, Haque confessed to his crime, but claimed that he had beaten up Rumpa for torturing their six-year-old child. According to police, Haque was sent to jail through the court on Wednesday noon.
