Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali firmly believes that the image of the country has not been tarnished due to the terrorist attacks in Gulshan and Sholakia of Kishoreganj.
“I want to state unequivocally that we don’t think Bangladesh’s image has somehow been tarnished. This has become an international problem and it has happened in many other countries. I don’t think there is any scope for anybody’s image being tarnished,” he told a questioner at a press conference at the foreign ministry yesterday.
The briefing was organised to apprise journalists of the prime minister’s visit to Mongolia to attend the 11th Summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) to be held on July 15 and 16. She and her 35-member delegation will leave for Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, by a special flight today, the briefing was told.
When pressed repeatedly on the issue of image, the foreign minister repeatedly said that there is no problem with regard to the image of the country.
“The most important aspect is that we have to combat and defeat this menace,” he said, adding, “All the friendly countries have voiced their support in Bangladesh’s fight against terrorism. So, there is no scope to take this thing negatively. We will work collectively with the rest of the world.”
“The way we handled the situation in Gulshan and Sholakia, it can be seen in very few countries in the world,” said Ali.
Regarding US notification stating that the dependants of the staff of US Embassy in Dhaka may leave Bangladesh, Foreign Minister Ali said that Washington has done this in accordance with their internal law and that they have done this in 33 more countries on different occasions.
To another question, he said that the issue of terrorism will get prominence in the ASEM Summit as it has become very important for the entire world.  ASEM is an exclusively Asian–European forum to enhance relations and various forms of cooperation between 51 countries and two regional organisations – European Union (EU) and ASEAN Secretariat. The foreign minister revealed that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe took an initiative to organise a separate event on terrorism and he invited the Bangladesh prime minister to co-chair the programme.
