Prime Minister’s Adviser on International Affairs Gouhar Rizvi yesterday said the damages from disasters could be reduced by taking necessary steps before and after the disasters, reports UNB.
The current government under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s leadership has already taken several steps in tackling disasters that minimised the damages of the cyclonic storm ‘Roanu’, said Gouhar. The PM’s adviser came up with the observation while addressing a workshop titled ‘Journalist Fellowship Programme to Reduce Disaster Risks’, at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in the capital.
He also laid emphasis on the importance of raising awareness by the media among people in reducing disaster risks.
Besides, Gouher Rizvi hoped that the fellowship will encourage the journalists to work with different aspects of disaster risk management.
Save the Children Bangladesh director Mushtaq Hossain, Ekushey Television CEO Manzurul Ahsan Bulbul, and its executive director Syed Borhan Kabir were, among others, present.
Thirty journalists from both the print and electronic media took part in the workshop. Of the participants, 12 will be selected for the fellowship for one year.
Under the programme, two journalists will be awarded for their reports on the issue following the decision taken by the jury.
