More than 50 websites are under the government’s scanner for apparently having the potential to drive the young generation towards militant activities.
The government has increased its watch on websites following the recent attacks on Dhaka’s Holey Artisan Bakery and near an Eid congregation at Sholakia in Kishoreganj. It has decided to block the YouTube videos of Islamic televangelist Dr Zakir Naik’s preaching after banning the Peace TV channel, which used to telecast those. Dr Naik’s ‘provocative’ speeches allegedly inspired some of the militants to carry out the terror attacks.
State minister for posts and telecommunications, Tarana Halim, said yesterday, “The government has decided to block the videos of Zakir Naik from YouTube. The Peace TV channel has already been banned because of his provocative speech.” She, however, pointed out that though they could block the ‘suspicious’ local websites, it would be difficult to block the sites operated from outside the country.
On Sunday, the transmission of Peace TV, a Dubai-based satellite channel that broadcasts the speeches of the controversial preacher, was stopped. The government took the measure when some of the militants apparently claimed that they were fans of a television channel that inspired them to embrace ‘Jihad’. All these militants come from well-off families and were educated in renowned educational institutions.
