The hostages who were killed by militants at Holey Artisan Bakery on July 1 died because of haemorrhage due to gunshot and hack wounds, forensic department officials at Dhaka Medical College (DMC) have said.
Of the 20 people killed, seven were shot in the neck from the back. Four of these seven are from Italy, two from Japan, and one from India.
Indian citizen Tarushi Jain was also hacked besides being shot in the neck. The forensic department has found around 40 hack-and-stab wounds on Tarushi’s body.
The bodies of the other 13, including a Bangladeshi and a Bangladesh-born US citizen, have hack wounds in the neck and the throat. Some of the bodies have splinter injuries from bombs, too.
A Bangladeshi woman, a pregnant Italian woman, and a Japanese citizen were struck on the head with heavy objects. The body of this Japanese citizen was found inside a deep freezer of the restaurant.
Forensic officials believe that of the five militants killed, three died in bombs lobbed by the combined force.
Four doctors and five assistants conducted the autopsies of those who died in the Gulshan attack at the Combined Military Hospital on July 3–4. The final report will be released within a few days, said the doctors of the forensic division. They added that a visceral examination would be conducted to make sure whether the militants had used Captagon. This drug improves the performance of combatants, makes them resistant to fatigue and fear, and removes any form of empathy. In other words, it is the ‘ideal’ drug to facilitate inhuman acts.
